Common Gemstone Shapes and Cuts
 

 

A Gem or Gemstone – Is a mineral or organic material with sufficient beauty, rarity and durability to be cut and set into jewelry.
 

 

Antique Cushion Cut     

It looks like a cross between a deep cut with large facets that was common in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries and a modern oval cut. This shape is also sometimes referred to as the “Pillow”. It has approximately 64 facets.



Baguette                       

Is a rectangular narrow gem cut. It has approximately 20 facets. A tapered baguette is a trapezoid shape one end is narrower.



Briolette                        


Is a pear shaped gemstone covered with facets that comes to a pointed end.



Cabochon                      


A rounded or curved (convex) outline and a smooth, polished surface with a flat back. Usually for gemstones that are opaque, translucent, strongly colored or have a star or cat's eye. The traditional cabochon is an oval but can also be fashioned into other shapes including triangles, rectangles and round.


Emerald Cut                  


Is a rectangular or square step cut with diagonal corners. It has approximately 50 facets.



Heart Shape                 


Is a pear shape with a cleft at the top. It has approximately 59 facets.

 

Marquise                       


Is a symmetrical boat shaped brilliant cut gem with pointed ends. It has approximately 57 facets.




Octagon Cut                  


This is a “step” cut but with the four corners metered. The facets run in steps parallel to the gemstone circumference. This cut is differentiated from the Emerald cut by steps on the pavilion that are not equidistant. It has approximately 53 facets.



Oval                               


Is a modified brilliant cut with an obround shaped girdle outline. The oval cut has an elliptical shape when viewed from the top. It has approximately 69 facets.



Pear or Teardrop  


Asymmetrical cut with one pointed and one rounded end. A hybrid cut, combining the best of the oval and the marquise, it is shaped like a sparkling teardrop. It has approximately 71 facets.



Princess Cut                   


Is technically known as “Square Modified Brilliant” and is a square version of the round brilliant cut with numerous sparkling facets. It has approximately 76 facets.



Radiant                         


Is a rectangular cut, combining the shape of an emerald cut and sparkle of a brilliant. It has approximately 70 facets.



Round Cut                     


As the name implies, it is round on top. It has approximately 57 facts.




Trillion                        


Is a triangular shape. It has approximately 44 facets.
 

 

Square                            

It is a special oblong shape where the sides are the same lengths. It has approximately 57 facets.
